The Cost Of Mobile Crane Hire
#
So, you’re looking to hire a mobile crane?
Unlike conventional tower cranes which are delivered to your site on a separate vehicle and set up in a fixed position, mobile cranes are wheel-based and can travel via road.
Equipped with the latest technology, these types of cranes can carry out lifts safely and productively in the most challenging environments and constricted spaces.
Before you decide whether to opt for mobile crane hire, you’re probably wondering how much it will cost you.
Are we right?
Here the team at BJW Cranes cover everything you need to know about the cost of mobile crane hire in the UK – including the factors that influence the price.
How much does mobile crane hire cost?
It’s difficult to put an exact figure on mobile crane hire, as it depends on the type and size of the crane you need, how long you need it and any additional equipment or personnel that may be required.
· Crane type and crane size
As a rule of thumb, the larger the crane and the more specialist features it has, the more expensive it will be.
Mobile cranes are suitable for all kinds of terrain and can move on roads and rough surfaces. They boast a telescopic design that enables them to lift heavy objects far and wide in restricted areas.
At BJW Cranes, we have a selection of mobile tower cranes available to hire, too. These combine the benefits of both mobile and tower cranes, making them perfect for lifts in cities where access is limited due to high-rise buildings, parked cars and narrow streets. They also offer faster set-up times, meaning you needn’t waste any time getting started.
· Location
The location of your mobile crane hire can impact the overall cost.
For example, a mobile crane is likely to be more expensive to hire in the south of England than it will be in the north. Likewise, if your worksite is in a large city you can expect to pay more, due to living costs being higher.
The good news is that, here at BJW, we pride ourselves on offering some of the most competitive prices for crane hire in Scunthorpe and Immingham and accommodate the project (and budget) requirements of clients across Yorkshire, Humberside, Lincolnshire and the East Midlands.

Crane hire type
There are two options available: CPA (Construction Plant Hire Association) crane hire or contract lifting.
If you’ve hired a mobile crane (or any other type of crane) in the past, CPA hire will give you the freedom to do things in your own way and time. BJW will provide the crane and an operator, leaving you to arrange insurance and oversee the lift yourself.
A contract lift, on the other hand, is an ideal alternative if you have little to no mobile crane hire experience and would much prefer to hand over the responsibility to a reputable company with a fully competent crew.
The initial cost of a contract lift is greater than a standard crane hire, but when you take into account the associated risks and amount of planning involved, it’s money well spent.
· Labour
Most lifting operations require the provision of a competent operator to work the machine, as well as a supervisor to oversee the lift from start to finish and a signaller to sling the load and signal the crane.
Additional riggers may be needed to help position the load safely, too.
Such personnel are included in the overall cost of mobile crane hire, here at BJW – but we can’t speak for all crane hire companies. And the number of labourers and their level of experience will have a dramatic impact on the price you’ll pay.
· Time
Premium rates typically apply on public holidays, weekends and evenings, due to labour costs being higher for those involved in the lifting operation.
Most mobile crane hire companies will specify the maximum length of time you can keep one of their machines on your premises for without being charged extra.
At BJW, we understand that things can change very quickly and there may come a time when you need to extend the duration of your rental to complete your project. That’s why we pride ourselves on offering a flexible service for all clients and, providing you give us enough notice, we can accommodate your needs for an extra fee.
